The Cinnamon Stick house was built by a sea captain Thomas J. Smith in 1850. Shortly after the family moved in Smith became enthralled by the California gold rush. To pacify his wife, who was appalled by the idea of leaving her new home, Smith disassembled the house and took it on ship, around the horn to California. By this time they arrived on the West Coast, the excitement of the gold rush was over. They turned the ship around and returned to Milbridge where Captain Smith rebuilt the house on Main Street where it stands today.
